Granted: Because PDFs are so basic, you won't always get every race, class, spell, rule, or feature, but they will explain you how to get started with D&D and offer you with the essential knowledge you need. 1: The D&D Basic Rules

By combining them with a variety of other free resources, you can essentially learn the entire game. The basi rules will teach you the fundamentals of conducting your first sessions as well as how to address the majority of the common encounters along the road. If you're hooked, start looking for a secondhand Players Handbook. Alternatively, look for the Starter campaign package. More on it in a second.

2: D&D character sheets

The most pleasant aspect of creating your own character is the flexibility to do whatever you want with the character; but, if you don't understand the rules or are overwhelmed by all the available information, it may be best to utilize a pre-made character sheet. Fortunately, you can purchase pre-made sheets featuring some of Wizards of the Coast's absolutely fantastic characters. Use these pages to build your own sly rogue, Wushu-inspired monk, or roaring warrior. Add exotic races like Elves, Tieflings, or gnomes, and you'll be off on new adventures with your pals. ​

3: unrestricted access to pre-made campaigns and adventure modules

Supplemental chapters for major campaigns are issued on a regular basis. By playing these chapters, you may decide if you and your friends want to buy or play the whole campaign. While this is not a common practice among Wizards, it is an excellent way to learn whether you want to be a campaign player or DM. If you have some patience, I would recommend starting with the campaign from the starter set "Lost Mine of Phandelver." This module may be found used and in good condition on the internet. This is the set with which I began my DM career.

if you hunt around your house, I am sure you have an old boardgame lying around. Ludo or monopoly or the like. Get some old game pieces and use those to represent your player characters and monsters. Grab a few pieces of paper and stick them together and add squares and you have a basic gaming board for representing the battles that for sure will take place in your campaigns. I have had succes with lego minis and old coins and assorted dice. Yes – the best and most immersive experience is to use a nice DnD miniature and gaming terrain. But most of the game goes on in your mind.
